Buddha of the Western Lands, Khlong Ngae, Sadao, Thailand

high-definition creative commons photographs from this small but colourful Chinese temple in Sadao District, Thailand, showing the decoration work, together with some further information.

This is a small and recently built Chinese temple (Sanchao) along the main Sadao-Hatyai road. As you travel along the road the temple really stands out, owing to its bright colours, and interesting looking decor. As seems to be usual with the Chinese temples in southern Thailand they are very assimilated to Buddhism, and the temple is named for Amitābhā, the Buddha of the Western Lands, which is also the main statue, and there are also images of Sakyamuni Buddha, Kuan Yin and the Monkey God.

There are also small shrines outside for the God of Heaven and the Ancestors, and also a burning pagoda where offerings of paper money, imitation gold and silver can be burnt and transferred to the ancestors for their comfort and use. There are Dragons, Cranes and other auspicious signs around the temple, and all the usual signs wishing for prosperity and longevity on the murals. The rituals in the temple are performed by lay people, and not monastics.
