33. Huineng

high-definition creative commons about Huineng in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.

Huineng, the Thirty-third Patriarch and Sixth Chinese Patriarch, was a poor firewood seller who achieved enlightenment upon hearing the Diamond Sutra. His Southern School emphasized sudden enlightenment and the idea that Buddha-nature is inherent in everyone, regardless of education or status. His teachings, recorded in the Platform Sutra, revolutionized Chinese Buddhism. Despite his humble origins, he became the most influential figure in Chan history, and his mummified body is still venerated in South China today.
