32. Hongren

high-definition creative commons about Hongren in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.

Hongren, the Thirty-second Patriarch and Fifth Chinese Patriarch, presided over a large community on East Mountain. He is best known for recognizing the spiritual genius of the illiterate layman Huineng. When Huineng wrote a verse demonstrating a perfect understanding of emptiness, Hongren secretly summoned him at night, explained the Diamond Sutra, and transmitted the Patriarchal Robe. To protect Huineng from jealous rivals, Hongren ordered him to flee south and remain in hiding before officially beginning his teaching.
