Daoxin, the Thirty-first Patriarch and Fourth Chinese Patriarch, was known for his extreme discipline, never lying down to sleep for sixty years. He established a permanent monastic community, moving Chan toward a more settled lifestyle. He famously saved a city from brigands by teaching the residents to chant the Great Wisdom Sutra, which manifested superhuman warriors that scared the attackers away. He died peacefully at age seventy-two, and his body remained miraculously lifelike after his death.
