30. Sengcan

high-definition creative commons about Sengcan in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.

Sengcan, the Thirtieth Patriarch and Third Chinese Patriarch, lived during a time of Buddhist persecution and frequently hid in the mountains. He is famously associated with the Hsin Hsin Ming (Verses on the Faith Mind). He enlightened the young novice Daoxin by pointing out that since no one binds you, there is no need to seek liberation. After nine years of training his successor, he transmitted the Dharma and the Robe, ensuring the survival of the Chan lineage through turbulent times.
