29. Huike

high-definition creative commons about Huike in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.

Huike, the Twenty-ninth Patriarch and Second Chinese Patriarch, was a deeply learned scholar who sought Bodhidharma at the Shaolin Monastery. To prove his sincerity and resolve to seek the Dharma, legend says he stood in the snow and severed his own arm. Bodhidharma subsequently pacified Huike’s mind, leading to his enlightenment. Huike spent years living among the common people, teaching the Original Emptiness of karmic obstructions before transmitting the lineage to Sengcan and facing a martyr’s death.
