25. Vāsasita

high-definition creative commons about Vāsasita in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.

Vāsasita, the Twenty-fifth Patriarch, was born in Kashmir with a clenched fist, symbolizing a jewel from a past life. He traveled through India, famously defeating a heretic who proposed a silent debate on the nature of No-Heart. He taught that the True Nature is neither a path nor a principle. After serving as a teacher to King Virtuous Conqueror, he transmitted the Dharma-eye to Puṇyamitra. He eventually cremated himself through the power of samādhi fire, leaving behind miraculous relics.
