Vasubandhu, the Twenty-First Patriarch, was born in Rajagṛha to a merchant family. An Arhat prophesied his birth as a sun of wisdom. He was a prolific scholar who eventually followed the sage’s calling after the King of his region relinquished his own son, Manula, to be Vasubandhu’s disciple. After transmitting the Dharma to Manula and teaching that awakening is unobstructed by the bubbles and shadows of the world, he leapt into the air and passed away in a mountain-like posture.
