Upagupta, the Fourth Patriarch, was a powerful teacher who lived in a cave and used bamboo tallies to count those he led to liberation. He is most famous for subduing the demon Māra. When Māra tried to disrupt his teaching, Upagupta transformed three foul corpses into a beautiful garland, trapping Māra until the "Evil One" repented and took refuge in the Three Jewels. Before his death, he transmitted the Heart-Dharma to his disciple Dhritaka through a profound gatha.
