3. Sanakavāsa

high-definition creative commons about Sanakavāsa in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.

The Third Patriarch, Sanakavāsa, was born in Mathura with a natural robe of auspicious grass, a sign of his high spiritual standing. Following the Buddha’s prophecy, he turned the Wheel of Dharma in the Uruda forest. He famously converted two fiery dragons who then donated land for a monastery. After searching for a worthy successor, he transmitted the Dharma to Upagupta. He passed away after demonstrating the fire-light samādhi, leaving behind sacred relics for his disciples.
