high-definition creative commons about Ānanda in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.
Ānanda, the Buddha’s cousin and faithful attendant for twenty-five years, was the Second Patriarch. Renowned for his unobstructed wisdom and perfect memory, he recited the sūtras at the First Council. When he approached his parinirvāṇa, he found himself caught between two warring kingdoms seeking his relics. To satisfy both, he rose into the air and divided his body into four parts through samādhi, leaving his remains to various kings and celestial beings to ensure the Dharma’s continued veneration.
