1. Mahākaśyapa

high-definition creative commons about Mahākaśyapa in the Transmission of the Lamp together with further information.

Mahākaśyapa, the First Patriarch, was a Brahmin from Magadha. He is famous for the Flower Sermon where he alone understood the Buddha’s silent transmission. Known for his asceticism, he presided over the First Council to preserve the Buddha’s teachings. Before his passing, he transmitted the Dharma-eye to Ānanda. He eventually entered the Kukkuṭapada Mountain to wait in samādhi for the future Buddha, Maitreya, still holding the Buddha’s robe as a symbol of the lineage.
