The Great Thūpa

VII. Obtaining Materials

high-definition creative commons photographs from VII. Obtaining Materials from The Legend of the Thūpas together with further information.

King Duṭṭhagāmaṇi sought to build the Mahāthūpa (Great Thūpa) without burdening his subjects with taxes. Miraculously, through the merit of the king and the blessings of the Arahats, all necessary materials—including precious gems, gold, and bricks—appeared spontaneously throughout the land. This chapter describes these divine occurrences, illustrating how the natural world itself cooperated to facilitate the creation of the island’s most magnificent and sacred Thūpa.
