V. The Mayiyaṅgana Thūpa

high-definition creative commons photographs from The Mayiyaṅgana Thūpa from The Legend of the Thūpas together with further information.

This chapter details the history of the Mahiyangana Thūpa, traditionally considered the first shrine built in Ceylon. Legend states it was established during the Buddha’s own visit to the island to subdue local supernatural beings. Over centuries, it was enlarged by various kings and maintained by dedicated Arahats. As a primary site of veneration, this Thūpa remains a symbol of the ancient and continuous Buddhist heritage in Sri Lanka.
