II.–IV. The Arrival of the Bodhi Tree

high-definition creative commons photographs from The Arrival of the Bodhi Tree from The Legend of the Thūpas together with further information.

These chapters recount the miraculous arrival of the sacred Bodhi-tree from India, brought by the Arahat Sanghamittā. Following its planting, King Devānampiyatissa ordered the construction of Thūpas at regular one-yojana intervals across the island. This systematic expansion ensured that every citizen could easily access a sacred shrine. These Thūpas acted as spiritual beacons, marking the island as a stronghold for the teachings preserved by the Arahats.
