V. Depositing the Relics

high-definition creative commons photographs from Depositing the Relics from The Legend of the Thūpas together with further information.

King Ajātasattu, realizing the vulnerability of the scattered relics, worked with the elder Arahats to gather them into a single, secure repository at Rājagaha. This chapter details the elaborate precautions taken to protect these sacred remains from theft or decay. This centralized relic deposit was intended to preserve the Buddha’s essence for future generations, eventually allowing King Asoka to distribute them and build thousands of new Thūpas.
