This chapter recounts the origin of the Bodhisatta’s journey toward Buddhahood. As the hermit Sumedha, he encounters Buddha Dīpaṅkara and is so inspired that he lays himself in the mire to serve as a bridge for the Buddha and his four hundred thousand Arahats. Recognizing Sumedha’s profound resolve, Dīpaṅkara prophesies his future enlightenment as Buddha Gotama. This sets the spiritual foundation for the eventual creation of sacred Thūpas.
