high-definition creative commons photographs about The Preparation of the Body together with further information.

Following the Buddha's passing, the Mallas of Kusinārā spend seven days honoring the body with music, dance, and garlands. In accordance with the Buddha’s previous instructions to Ānanda, they treat his remains like those of a Universal Monarch (Cakkavatti). The body is wrapped in layers of new cloth and wool, placed in an iron oil-vessel, and prepared for cremation on a magnificent pyre, reflecting the highest level of worldly honor.
