The Buddha enters a series of deep meditative absorptions, moving through the four jhānas and the formless attainments. Emerging from the state of cessation, he descends back to the first jhāna and then ascends again to the fourth. Upon emerging from the fourth jhāna, he immediately passes away into Parinibbāna. His death is marked by a massive earthquake and terrifying thunder, signifying the end of the life of the Great Teacher of gods and men.
