39. Subhadda, the Last Direct Disciple

high-definition creative commons photographs about Subhadda, the Last Direct Disciple together with further information.

An ascetic named Subhadda seeks an audience, but Ānanda repeatedly refuses him to avoid disturbing the dying Buddha. Overhearing this, the Buddha insists on seeing him. Subhadda asks about the validity of other teachers, but the Buddha focuses on the Noble Eightfold Path, stating that where this path is found, true renunciants exist. Subhadda is deeply moved, goes for refuge, and becomes the Buddha’s last direct convert and disciple before his passing.
