Sensing that Cunda might feel guilty that his meal caused the Buddha’s illness, the Buddha instructs Ānanda to reassure him. He explains that two offerings of food are of equal and supreme merit: the meal eaten before Awakening and the meal eaten before Parinibbāna. By validating Cunda’s gift, the Buddha ensures the smith receives honor rather than blame, teaching that the intention behind the gift is what creates lasting merit and happiness.
