30. Bringing Drinking Water

high-definition creative commons photographs about Bringing Drinking Water together with further information.

Exhausted and thirsty on the road to Kusinara, the Buddha asks Ānanda for water from a nearby stream. Ānanda hesitates because five hundred wagons had just crossed, leaving the water muddy and fouled. However, at the Buddha’s third request, Ānanda approaches the stream and finds it miraculously clear and pure. This event highlights the Buddha’s spiritual power and his deteriorating physical state, requiring frequent rest as he nears his final destination.
