29. The Last Meal

high-definition creative commons photographs about The Last Meal together with further information.

The Buddha travels to Pāvā and stays in the mango grove of Cunda the Smith. Cunda prepares a special meal called sukaramaddava. The Buddha eats it but instructs Cunda to bury the remainder, as no one else could digest it. Soon after, the Buddha suffers from bloody dysentery and intense pain. Despite his physical agony, he remains mindful and composed, beginning the final walk toward Kusinārā, demonstrating his mastery over physical suffering.
