After Ānanda departs, Māra approaches the Buddha and urges him to enter Parinibbāna. The Buddha agrees, stating that his mission is complete and his disciples are well-trained. He formally relinquishes his will to live, an act that causes a great earthquake and thunder. When Ānanda later realises his mistake and begs the Buddha to stay, the Buddha refuses, explaining that the time for such a request has passed and all things must end.
