King Asoka prepared for the Bodhi tree’s journey by constructing a golden vessel and performing solemn rites. He made an Act of Truth, causing a branch of the Bodhi-tree to sever itself and settle into the vase. Accompanied by Saṅghamittā Therī and an embassy, the sapling traveled to the coast and sailed to Laṅkā. Upon arrival, King Devānampiyatissa received the tree with deep devotion, establishing the Buddha’s dispensation and the Bhikkhunī order on the island.
