17 Ingratitude

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Ingratitude Story from the Rasavāhiṇī (Heart Streams) together with further information.

A thief, imprisoned for twelve years, is freed when a loyal friend takes his place. The ungrateful thief never returns, leaving the friend imprisoned for twelve more years. Following a royal amnesty, the friend explains his dread of ungrateful people to a deity. Moved by his virtue and the Maṅgala Sutta, the deity crowns him king, rewarding his loyalty over the bitter peril of base human betrayal and cruel ingratitude.
