XII. The Sacrifice of the Horse

high-definition creative commons photographs from The Sacrifice of the Horse in the Ramayana together with further information.

Despite the era of prosperity, rumors regarding Sita’s time in Lanka trouble the citizens. To uphold the standards of a king, Rama makes the agonizing decision to banish the pregnant Sita to the forest. She finds refuge in the hermitage of Sage Valmiki, where she gives birth to twin sons, Lava and Kusha. Years later, during Rama’s Ashvamedha sacrifice, the boys appear and chant the epic story of the Ramayana, eventually revealing their identity.
