In his search for Sita, Rama reaches the Nilgiri mountains and forms an alliance with the Vanara (monkey) king, Sugriva, and the mighty Hanuman. Rama helps Sugriva regain his kingdom by defeating the usurper Bali. In gratitude, Sugriva mobilizes his vast army to search the four quarters of the earth. Hanuman, possessing divine strength, is tasked with searching the south, eventually leaping across the ocean to reach the island fortress of Lanka.
