V. On the Banks of the Godavari

high-definition creative commons photographs from On the Banks of the Godavari in the Ramayana together with further information.

The exiles move further south to the banks of the sacred Godavari River, settling at Panchavati. The beauty of the forest and the proximity of holy sages provide a peaceful backdrop to their daily lives. However, this tranquility is shattered when the demoness Shurpanakha encounters them. Her advances toward Rama and subsequent mutilation by Lakshmana trigger a chain of events that attracts the attention of her brother, the powerful demon-king Ravana.
