King Dasaratha prepares to crown Rama as his successor, but Queen Kaikeyi, influenced by her maid Manthara, intervenes. She invokes two old boons to demand Rama’s fourteen-year exile and the coronation of her son, Bharata. Bound by his word, the heartbroken King agrees. Rama accepts the decree with perfect equanimity to uphold his father’s honor. Despite his pleas for them to stay, Sita and his brother Lakshmana insist on joining him in exile.
