True loving-kindness (mettā) is pure goodwill, unlike craving or affection. It is hatelessness directed toward beings’ welfare. 528 ways to develop: five unlimited categories (all beings, breathing, creatures, persons, individuals) and seven limited (female, male, noble, ignoble, devas, humans, petas), each with four wishes. Fifteen virtues precede development. The Metta-sutta teaches all-inclusive and group-divided loving-kindness. Its object is always living beings.
