Forbearance means enduring praise without greed and insults without hate. It is non-hate specifically when provoked. Ven. Puṇṇa exemplified tolerance even to physical assault. Nine causes of anger relate to self, friends, or enemies regarding past, present, or future actions. Forbearance is strength of ascetics and Brahmins. Supreme patience tolerates rudeness from inferiors without special reason. Sakka’s forbearance demonstrated enduring insults while remaining calm.
