Morality (sīla) controls physical/verbal actions and upholds meritorious deeds. Includes volition, abstention from wrong actions, and right mental states. Restraints include monastic rules, mindfulness, knowledge, forbearance, and energy. Morality serves as foundation for consciousness in sensuous, material, immaterial, and supermundane realms. Like a yak sacrificing life to protect its tail-hair, one should preserve morality even at life’s risk.
