In May 1956, Mahāsi Sayādaw led an eminent delegation to Moji, Japan, establishing a permanent Theravāda foothold following post-war Japanese interest. The monks successfully surveyed and consecrated a legally autonomous Sīmā boundary on Kyushu Island and erected a replica World Peace Pagoda. Before returning to Burma, the Sayādaw held strategic meetings with local associations and closely analyzed Japanese Zen meditation methods to understand its appeal.
