34. The Story of the Woodpecker (Kṣānti)

high-definition creative commons photographs from The Story of the Woodpecker (Kṣānti) together with further information.

A woodpecker saves a lion by removing a bone stuck in its throat. Later, when the woodpecker is hungry, the lion refuses to help him. The woodpecker chooses not to seek revenge, showing that the virtuous do good because it is right, not for reciprocity.
