She first aspired to greatness as a nun during Buddha Padumuttara’s time. Later, as a slave water-carrier, she organized dwellings for five Paccekabuddhas. Born as the Buddha’s step-mother, she nursed him devotedly. After King Suddhodana’s death, she led 500 Sakyan princesses into monastic life. She became an Arahat after a discourse and was declared the foremost nun of long standing.
