Under Buddha Padumuttara, he aspired to uphold the Vinaya. Born a barber, he ordained with six Sakyan princes. He became an Arahat and the foremost master of the monastic rules. He gave some key rulings: dreams do not count as faults; showing property as instructed is blameless. The Buddha endorsed his judgments. He was declared foremost in upholding the Vinaya discipline.
