As wealthy Vedeha, he aspired to be foremost in ascetic practices under Buddha Padumuttara. He later became the poor Ekasāṭaka Brahmin who gave his only garment to Buddha Vipassī, earning royal favour. Through subsequent lives, including as a merchant, he continued meritorious deeds. In his final life, he became the Buddha’s disciple renowned for austere practices and was declared foremost among those practising dhutaṅga.
