After an ancient aspiration under Buddha Padumuttara, Nakulapitu and Nakulamātu encountered Buddha Gotama in the Bhesakaḷā Forest. Recognizing him as their beloved son from many past lives, they attained Stream-entry knowledge. Desiring to remain together throughout future existences, the Buddha advised they maintain equal conviction, morality, generosity, and intelligence. Consequently, Nakulamātu was declared the foremost among female lay disciples who are close to the Buddha.
