05 Uttarā Nandamātā

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Uttarā Nandamātāfrom the Great Chronicles together with further information.

Uttarā, the daughter of the wealthy treasurer Puṇṇasīha, was a devout Stream-enterer. Married to a non-believer, she hired the courtesan Sirimā to attend to her husband so she could freely practice her Uposatha precepts for fifteen days. Jealous, Sirimā poured boiling oil on Uttarā, but her deep mettā-jhāna protected her from any harm. After Sirimā’s repentance and subsequent Stream-entry, the Buddha declared Uttarā the foremost female lay disciple in jhāna.
