03-04 Khujjuttarā and Sāmāvatī

high-definition creative commons posters depicting Khujjuttarā and Sāmāvatīfrom the Great Chronicles together with further information.

In the city of Kosambī, the humpbacked slave Khujjuttarā attained Stream-entry and taught Queen Sāmāvatī and five hundred ladies, who all became noble disciples. The jealous Queen Māgaṇḍiyā repeatedly plotted against them, eventually burning them alive in their mansion. This tragedy stemmed from past evil deeds when they burnt a Paccekabuddha's hut. Honoring their virtue, the Buddha declared Khujjuttarā foremost in learning and Sāmāvatī foremost in loving-kindness.
