Nakulapitu aspired to become the Buddha's closest lay disciple aeons ago. In his final birth, he and his wife Nakulamātu instantly recognized Buddha Gotama as their son, having been his parents or relatives for thousands of past lives. After receiving specific teachings on spiritual harmony and lifelong loyalty, they attained Stream-entry. The Buddha later declared Nakulapitu foremost among lay disciples for his unique intimacy.
