Born to a courtesan and discarded on a rubbish heap, Jīvaka was rescued by Prince Abhaya. He mastered medicine in Takkasilā, eventually becoming a renowned royal physician. Jīvaka famously cured the Buddha and donated his own Mango Grove monastery to the Saṅgha. Due to his extraordinary faith, the Buddha declared him the foremost lay disciple for personal devotion, fulfilling an ancient aspiration.
