Kāśyapa-Mātanga and Gobharaṇa were the first monks to bring Buddhism to China during the Eastern Han Dynasty. Following Emperor Ming’s dream of a golden deity, they were invited to Luoyang, where they resided at Baima (White Horse) Temple. They are credited with translating early Buddhist texts, including the sūtra of Forty-two Chapters, establishing the foundation for the religion’s transmission into the Chinese heartland.
