King Vaṭṭagāmaṇi Abhaya faced a dual threat from a Brahmin rebellion and a Tamil invasion, forcing him into hiding for fourteen years. Upon regaining his throne, he built the Abhayagiri Vihāra, which eventually led to a major schism in the Sangha. Crucially, during his reign, the Buddhist scriptures (Tipiṭaka), which had been preserved orally for centuries, were committed to writing for the first time at Aluvihāra to ensure their survival.
