XIX. [Duṭṭhagāmani]

high-definition creative commons photographs from Duṭṭhagāmani in the Chronicle of the Island together with further information.

After a period of foreign Tamil rule, King Duṭṭhagāmaṇi arose to reclaim the island for Buddhism. He led a holy war to liberate Anurādhapura, motivated by the desire to protect the Sasana rather than mere power. After defeating the King Elāra, he unified the country and embarked on massive meritorious works, most notably the construction of the Mahāthūpa (Ruwanwelisaya). His reign represents the heroic restoration and triumph of the Buddhist faith.
