XVI. [The Bodhi Tree]

high-definition creative commons photographs from The Bodhi Tree in the Chronicle of the Island together with further information.

Princess Anula desired ordination, but Mahinda explained that only a Bhikkhunī could ordain women. Consequently, King Asoka sent his daughter, Saṅghamittā, to the island. She brought a sapling of the sacred Bodhi Tree from Bodh Gaya. The tree was planted in the Mahāmeghavana garden with great ceremony and miraculous signs. Its arrival established the female monastic order (Bhikkhunī Sasana) and provided a lasting symbol of the Buddha’s enlightenment in Sri Lanka.
