XV. [The Relics, the Buddhas, and Queen Anulā]

high-definition creative commons photographs from The Relics, the Buddhas, and Queen Anulā in the Chronicle of the Island together with further information.

To provide the island with objects of worship, Mahinda requested relics of the Buddha. Through spiritual intervention, the Buddha’s collar-bone relic was brought from India. It was placed atop Missaka Mountain, where it performed miracles, emitting fire and water. The King then constructed the Thūpārāma, the first stupa in Sri Lanka, to enshrine the relic. This gave the island a physical living presence of the Buddha, further sanctifying the land.
