IX. [Vijaya’s Story]

high-definition creative commons photographs from Vijaya’s Story in the Chronicle of the Island together with further information.

Coinciding with the Buddha’s Parinibbāna, Prince Vijaya, a reckless prince from India, was exiled by his father. He landed in Sri Lanka with seven hundred followers. The Buddha, foreseeing the island as a future center for his teachings, asked the gods to protect Vijaya. After subduing the local Yakkhas, Vijaya founded the first human kingdom at Tambapaṇṇi. This marks the beginning of the Sinhalese lineage and the island’s organized civilization.
