II. The Conquering of the Nāgas

high-definition creative commons photographs from The Conquering of the Nāgas in the Chronicle of the Island together with further information.

In the second chapter of the Dīpavaṁsa, the Buddha travels to Sri Lanka for a second time to settle a violent war between the Nāga kings, Mahodara and Cūḷodara. Using his supernatural powers, he creates a terrifying darkness to subdue their pride, eventually preaching a message of peace and reconciliation. The Nāgas convert to Buddhism, offering him a gem-set throne. The Buddha also visits several sacred sites, including Kalyāṇī and the future Mahāmeghavana.
